The inception of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E) was one among the first to be established in the State of Karnataka in the year 1982. Our mission is to create ideas that deepen and advance our understanding of the realm of Computer Science and Engineering and with those ideas to develop innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who changed the world. Classes are conducted on a full-time and on a part-time basis in an intimate-scale environment, and take full advantage of the assets provided by JSS Science and Technology and its surrounding communities. The department is actively involved in international collaborative research and also in sponsored research projects through various funding agencies.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in 1982 was one among the first to be established in the State of Karnataka. It was affiliated to University of Mysore, later to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and presently to JSS Science and Technological University (JSSTU). The department constantly strives to accomplish its vision, Global excellence in teaching, and technology development, research and Innovation. The department has a good infrastructure with competent faculty member’s nearly 35 and a vibrant student body around 700. Several of our alumni  hold important positions in the industry and academia worldwide. Students have been placed, both in India and abroad, in several leading national and international companies including Amazon, Infineon, Western Digital, McAfee, Cisco, Qualcomm, SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, HPE, Digital McKinsey, Philips, National Instruments, Mercedes, Juniper, Netapp, Walmart, Goldman Sachs, Volvo, Bosch and Harman. The Department is actively engaged in research activities in various areas, nearly 800 research papers are published in reputed conference proceedings and Journals. More than 30 research scholars are awarded Ph.D.

The student mentoring system has been introduced in our department for establishing a better and more effective relationship between students and teachers. The objective of SMS is to continuously monitor council and guide students in educational and personal matters. It also helps to identify students’ interests and create opportunities for growth in relevant areas. This system has been useful in identifying slow and advanced learners. The aim of the student mentoring system is: –

  • To enhance teacher-student relationships.
  • To enhance students’ academic performance and attendance.
  • To minimize student dropout ratio.
  • To monitor the student’s regularity and discipline.
  • To enable the parents to know the performance and regularity of wards.

Types of mentoring adopted in our department are 

  • Professional Guidance:- Regarding professional goals, selection of career, and higher education.
  • Career Advancements:- Regarding self-employment, entrepreneurship development, opportunities, morale, honesty, and integrity required for career growth
  • Course Specific:- Regarding the selection of open elective and professional elective courses during their graduation.

THE PRACTICE:

  • Each faculty member is the mentor for a group of 20 to 25 students allocated to him/ her by the Head of the Department. Those faculties will continue to be the mentors for the same group of students till their graduation.
  • The mentor collects, maintains, and updates the information related to student activities such as Academic, Curricular, Co-curricular activities, and Extra Curricular achievements. Keep contact details of students and parents.
  • It is the practice of mentors to meet students individually or in groups. The mentor meets the students informally outside class hours as well and guides them. In isolated cases, parents are called for counseling.
  • At least 4 to 5 meetings are arranged by mentors for their students in each semester usually after the completion of each CIE event to assess the student’s performance and guide them accordingly.
  • During the meeting, Mentors will access students’ Academic progress and all their activities are discussed and recorded. Any discrepancies such as disciplinary issues, health issues, sense of insecurity, lack of attendance, etc. are discussed and counseled with care.
  • A documented record of the mentoring process, a detailed progressive record of the student, and a brief but clear record of all discussions with students are maintained for reference purposes.

GUIDELINES FOR MENTOR:

Faculty mentors play a crucial role in mentoring students. They provide both professional and personal advice to the student, which helps the students to balance professional goals with their personal lives and give emotional encouragement during challenging times. Mentors and make use of following guidelines for effective mentoring.

  • Collects personal information from the student without touching sensitive issues or forcing any information out of the students and then provides the needed counseling to them.
  • Mentor–mentee relation is respectful and deemed confidential. Don’t filter it with gossip of any kind. Restrict the influence only on progressive and positive aspects through counseling. Don’t end up in ‘fault-finding’.
  • Offer guidance and counseling as and when the student required in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Continuously monitor, counsel, and guide the student in all academic pursuits and motivate student to participate in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Advise students on effective utilization of university/college infrastructure and resources.
  • Assist the students in getting a good placement and keeps contact with the students even after their graduation.

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT / MENTEE:

Mentees are responsible for gaining their mentors’ trust and confidence by interacting morally, and ethically so as to value the mentor’s time and professional, personal commitments. Mentees’ roles will depend on their needs, academic experience, and the nature of the mentoring relationship.

Following guidelines will be useful for students /mentees to take full advantage of opportunities provided by the student mentoring system.

  • Mentor has taken up the task to help and make you better in all aspects. So, be transparent in both your talk and your mind. Your mentor needs to know you better to guide you better.
  • Devote time to the mentoring relationship and often interact with the mentor.
  • Have clear-cut objectives before meeting with the mentor. Speak clearly to the point, without confusion.
  • List and communicate strengths, learning needs, development potential, values, and goals, both long and short-term.
  • Keep the mentor informed of academic progress, successes, challenges and other concerns.
  • Mentor has more to share and hence, asks for it. Seek knowledge and motivation to become better. Listen intently to the suggestions and guidelines of the mentor, could note them down too.
  • You need not have to agree on everything with your mentor and hence express your opinions. This is beneficial for both.

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) BYTES, the annual national-level technical fest was conducted by Linux Campus Club SJCE. FOSS CAMP is the annual technical fest of the Linux Campus Club, held every year during the odd semester. The entire club comes together hosting a plethora of fun – filled technical and non-technical events. The aim has always been to reach as many students as possible with diverse events which are conducted over a period of a week.

GitHub session was conducted online via Google Meet at the preferred time of participants. The participants were divide into 12 teams of 11 members each (totally 135 participants) and 2 teaching volunteers were assigned to each team. Resources were shared as GitHub repository links. Git is a speedy and efficient distributed VCS tool that enables multiple developers or teams to work separately without having an impact on the work of others. Keeping that in mind, the session introduced the advantages of GIT in today’s industrial scenario and incorporated all the basics of version control system. The session was interactive with personal attention been given to all teams and participants. To evaluate the understanding of participants at the end of the session, a software was specially made by LCC. The software was a web interface which had many checkpoints with a leaderboard.

Topics covered in the workshop:-Introduction to machine learning and Data pre-processing.  These topics gave an indepth knowledge of machine learning concepts and its applications for students. Various real world examples were given to make the students understand the concepts clearly.  Around 380 students had registered for the workshop and 117 among them attended all the sessions.

HACKELITE’19, a 36-hour hackathon, was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in association with its student club, Linux Campus Club on 9th and 10th November.

The ceremony was inaugurated with the gracious presence of the Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner Mr. Gurudatta Hegde, the Vice Chancellor JSS Science and Technology University Mysuru Dr. L Jawahar Nesan, the Dean of JSS Science and Technology University Dr. T N Nagabhushan. Head Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering Dr. M P Pushpalatha and along with a strong team of industry professionals from Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

The event was supported by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme -III, Convergent Solutions, BYJU’S along with various food partners.

35 teams were shortlisted for the hackathon after initial screening. Teams were allowed to work on problems related to Smart campus parking, Development of BOT for answering user queries, Secure transit intruder detection system, Smart Datacenter, Disaster management solution and Donor management system.

After the final evaluation, students from The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru won the first place and a cash prize of Rs 75,000. Students from PES University, Bengaluru, secured second place and a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

SPARSH, the techno-cultural club of our college started in the year 2014. The sole objective of SPRASH is to inspire the students by giving them an insight into the lives of renowned personalities.

People who have achieved prowess in their respective fields, be it art, science, business etc., are invited to inspire the student community. The lecture series were organized under the theme “MY TALK MY STORY” and the following distinguished speakers were invited.

[/vc_toggle][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Department Official Student Club” tab_id=”1642657817196-3bef1d0c-af4f”][vc_column_text]1.  Linux Campus Club (LCC), is a non-profit technical organization under the department of Computer Science and Engineering, JSS S&T University Mysuru, India;  Now in its decennial year, the main aim of the organization is to spread awareness about free and open source software among the students of JSS S&T University and is run by the students themselves. We encourage students to make the transition from proprietary software to FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).

At the beginning of every academic year, registrations are opened for LCC, and students across all the departments are encouraged to join the club. The first step we take towards fostering the use of free and open source software among the students is to distribute customized linux installation DVDs to all the members soon after the membership drive. An installation session is conducted to guide the members through the installation step by step.

To familiarize the students with linux, sessions are conducted regularly by the members themselves on basic linux features, various languages such as python and tools like lex and yacc. We are ever ready to help students in any topic related to their curriculum as well by conducting sessions on demand. We also conduct talks by members of the open source community and workshops to facilitate hands on experience to supplement the sessions conducted.

2. Google Developer Student Clubs are university-based community groups for students interested in Google developer technologies. Students with an interest to grow as a developer are welcome. By joining a GDSC, students grow their knowledge in a peer-to-peer learning environment and build solutions for local businesses and their community. GDSC JSSSTU also hosts workshops to help students learn about Google technologies. And they work with local businesses, startups, NGOs, even their universities, to build real solutions for real problems. Through this experience, they not only bridge the gap between theory and practice for students but leave a legacy of impact.

Objectives:

  • Connect: Students interested in developer technologies at our college or university get to meet like-minded peers. All are welcome, including those with diverse backgrounds and different majors.
  • Learn: Students learn about a range of technical topics and gain new skills through hands-on workshops, events, talks, and project-building activities online and in-person.

Along with an employee in HP, USA, he was the first to demonstrate successfully the interoperability between distributed objects systems.

In 1997, he started working as an independent consultant, with main focus on architecting of projects that used CORBA. Some of his clients included IBM Austin, DSQ Software Ltd., Chennai, AIC Software AG, Switzerland, HCL Perot Systems, India, IBM Global Services, India and LEC Software, India.

While at IBM, he represented IBM at the Object Management Group (OMG) and contributed towards the standardization of CORBA. He also invented technologies that are now patented.

In 1998, Raghu Hudli co-founded ObjectOrb. As the Managing Director of the company, his leadership and vision has translated to several new product initiatives and healthcare focus at ObjectOrb.

Raghu Hudli is a renowned corporate trainer in CORBA. He has also taught software architecture courses at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.)

Raghu Hudli has a Ph. D. in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska. Prior to his Ph. D., he completed his Masters in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Under Graduate from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore.”

Prasanna Gonuguntla Prasanna Gonuguntla is Vice President of Product Development team in India for Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars. The team comprises of talented engineers who develop Daimler AG’s new products across all platforms ranging from Sedans to SUVs.

Prasanna has varied experience spanning 23 years in Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering and PLM. He has been instrumental in building the organization as one of the largest captive R&D center for Daimler AG outside Germany. He joined MBRDI in 1999 as a Product Development Engineer in Bangalore office. Prior to joining MBRDI, he was with TATA Motors in Pune. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Mysore & Master’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering from BITS, Pilani.

Dr. C. Krishna Mohan is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Dean of Public and Corporate Relations at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), India. He has been with IIT Hyderabad since 2009. He was also the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Hyderabad from May 2010 till October 2014. Before joining IIT Hyderabad, he was a senior faculty member at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (NITK Surathkal). He received his M.Tech from NITK Surathkal and Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras).

Prof Krishna Mohan heads Visual Learning and Intelligence Lab (VIGIL) at IIT Hyderabad working in the research areas of video content analysis, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning. He is a recipient of Excellence in Teaching Award, in recognition of distinguished teaching in the year 2018 at IIT Hyderabad. He has published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences proceedings. He has guided several Ph.D., Masters, and Undergraduate students. He has successfully carried out several projects with industry, government agencies, and academia. He serves as a reviewer for several reputed international conferences and IEEE journals and is a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of ACM, AAAI Member, Life Member of ISTE, Fellow of IEI, IETE, and TAS.

Shanmugam Manjunath Shanmugam Manjunath (23 February 1978 – 19 November 2005) was a manager (grade A officer) for the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) who was murdered for sealing a corrupt petrol station in Lakhimpur Kheri, UP. This incident inspired several students at IIM, IIT and other institutes culminating with the IIM students setting up the “The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust”. Manjunath did his initial schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, BEML Nagar, Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka. He finished his 10th in 1993 and 12th std in science stream in 1995 from the same school. Later on he did his Computer Science Engineering degree from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore, and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management Lucknow
Niranjan Babu Niranjan Babu is currently Managing Director at Accenture India.

Niranjan completed his Masters in Computer Science from the Texas A&M University USA, and Under Graduate in Civil Engineering from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore.

Post Under Graduate he worked at SJCE Mysore– CAD Center for World Bank Rural Water Supply Project. Post that he worked for Tata Consulting Engineers -Mumbai. Following that, he moved to the US for perusing Master’s Degree.

He then started working as Software Engineer for CGN Consultants USA for short stint. He then joined Anderson Consulting USA in 2001. He was based out of Minneapolis – USA working on Strategy and Consulting transformation programs for Health Care, Banking, Insurance, Retail and Resources client. He moved to India in 2011 and has been primality focused on Health Care Clients across APAC and North America

Mr. Vinay G M,

Mr. Vinay G M, Deputy Commissioner of Customs, completed his B.E. in Computer Science & Engineer from SJCE in the year 2011. He also has done his M.A in Public Administration. Initially, he joined MBBS at JSS Medical College, Mysore but very soon changed the stream, since he didn’t have a keen interest in that field. Later he got admitted to CSE at SJCE.

He got selected to a company called Huawei Technologies in campus selection and worked for 5 months. Later he quit the IT job, started preparing for UPSC exam and cleared Civil Services Examination in the year 2013 by securing AIR 459 and got selected as Officer of Indian Revenue Service 2014 batch in Indian Customs and Central Excise Department. He got posted as Assistant Commissioner of Service Tax in Bangalore in the year 2016.

Later in 2017 when new indirect taxation system GST was introduced throughout India, got posted in GST Department and looked after the implementation and administration of GST [Goods and Service Tax]. Presently he is working as Deputy Commissioner of Customs in Bengaluru.

Mr. Thrinethra K R Mr. Thrinethra K R secured 515 Rank in UPSC 2016 Civil service Examination. Before that, he was also selected as Tahsildar in KAS examination. He completed his B.E in Computer Science and Engineering in 2011 from SJCE.
Mr. Santhosh B M Mr. Santhosh B M was born in 1992. He did his schooling from St Mary’s School, T Narasipura Town, Mysuru District and Pre-University Education from Sadvidya PU College, Mysuru. Later he joined B.E in Computer Science and Engineering at SJCE Mysuru and graduated in 2013. He has selected in Software Company called NTT Data through campus placement. But his passion for serving the society made him leave the software company and pursue UPSC Civil Services Examination. Mr. Santhosh quote the words “Enter to learn and go out to serve” written in SJCE campus was always a source of inspiration for him. He cleared UPSC Civil Service Examination 2017 with All India Rank 307 and soonly he will be joining for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as trainee officer.
Venkatesh Nayak Mr. Venkatesh Nayak born in 1991 and a native of a small village Dumathi, Raichur District. He completed his BE in Computer Science & Engineering from SJCE in the year 2013. He did all his primary and higher school from Government Schools. He cleared KPSC exams in 2014 and presently Working as a Assistant Director, Karnataka Government Insurance Department Bengaluru. In the year 2017, he cleared UPSC exams with All India Ranking of 930.
  Dhananjay (Kannada: ಧನಂಜಯ್) is an Indian film and theater actor working in Kannada film industry.After acting in a host of theater acts, he made his feature film debut inDirector’s Special in 2013. He fetched the debut actor award at the SIIMA Awards for his performance in the film.

Dhananjay was born in Kalenhalli village in Arasikere, Hassan district. His childhood in India was mostly spent by watching and acting in dramas in the village along with his father. He moved to Mysore to pursue his Engineering degree in Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering and subsequently passed out as a rank student. This lead him to a good job offer from Infosys company in Mysore. However, his interest was set in acting and he used to frequently visit the popular Rangayana theater group in Mysore. Eventually, he landed up with many acting assignments in the same theater group. He also underwent an acting workshop at Germany facilitated by Germany based theater director Christian Stuckl.
