 The Department was established along with the Institution in the year 1963. The academic activities of the department are teaching, research and conducting workshops, seminars, guest lecturers from the resource persons from various research centers. The department of Physics has been recognized as a research center of VTU, Belagavi and JSSS & TU, Mysuru.

The Department imparts education in Basic Science both in theory and through experiments. The objective is to create the basic firm foundation required by the engineers to plan for appropriate applications of the materials, objects and the material science concepts studied under the science education which in turn provides them the tool for the choice of the proper plan for the right application. The Department has students registered for the Ph.D., programs under VTU and as well as JSSS & T Universities working in the area of composite materials & dielectrics.

The Department is located in the Administrative block of the college. The Department cum Lab is in the first floor of the AB-block; and the lab is spreading over an area of 40×70 ft., where nearly 40 students can perform experiments at a time. Now an additional lab with area 20×20 ft., is also in use. The Department provides many facilities to study the basic science principles through experiments.

 The Department also provides certain major equipment’s and advanced software which are useful for research activities, the facilities are as follows:

LIST OF MAJOR EQUIPMENTS:

  1. Mossbauer Spectrometer system (4096 channels). Type – MC 1003.
  2. Multi frequency ultrasonic interferometer (0.03% accuracy) with sample cells and the data acquisition system and plotter.
  3. Setup for the measurement of B-H Curve and susceptibility (Electronic version).

SOFTWARE: SOFTWARE NAME: Material Explorer (Single User License).

SOFTWARE DETAILS: Material Explorer is a multi-purpose molecular dynamics software package designed to work with system that conventional MD software cannot handle, for example ceramics and semi-conductors. Materials Explore; has a potential Library that includes potential functions and parameters for a wide range of atom-to-atom interactions covering the spectrum of Molecular Dynamics, and the maker of this software is  Fujitsu. Organics, Polymers, Biomolecules, Metals, Ceramics, Semicondutors, etc., can be tested for their periodicity and stack alignment with respect to their crystal structure.

The following are the phases which can be probed using this software and the pertaining properties of the materials which can be studied for the given sample:

  1. Crystals, Amorphous solids, Liquids and Gases (Periodic boundaries).
  2. Phase transactions, Expansion, Defects, Compressibility, Tensile trength, etc.

PO-1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

PO-2: Problem analysis: Identify,   formulate,   review   research   literature,   and    analyze    complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

PO-3: Design/ development of solutions: Design  solutions  for  complex  engineering  problems  and design   system   components   or   processes   that   meet   the   specified   needs   with   appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

PO-4: Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

PO-5: Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

PO-6: The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

PO-7: Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in   societal   and   environmental   contexts,   and   demonstrate   the   knowledge   of,   and   need   for sustainable development.

 SJCE Astronomy and Space Technology Club

Prof. Mahadeva Prasad P, Assistant Professor, SJCE, JSSSTU is the faculty coordinator for the SJCE Astronomy & Space Technology Club.

SJCE established the SJCE Astronomy and Space Technology Club which was inaugurated by Dr. A.S. Kiran Kumar, Former Chairman, ISRO on 28th April 2018. Ronaldo Laishram the then student of SJCE who is well known for his work in Astronomy and been awarded as a young scientist from the Government of India, pioneered this club event in SJCE.

 

Vision of the Club:

  • • To develop and popularize Astronomy and Space Technology in the Institution.
  • • Seek interest in students towards Astronomy and Space Technology.
  • • To harness scientific temperament and inculcate rational thinking among us.
  • • To create proficient scientific educators and communicators.
  • • Creating platform for amateur astronomers and space technology enthusiast to carry out research works, acquire and share knowledge in the fields of astronomy and  space technology by the help of scientists and researcher of renowned institutes.

 Activities of the Club:

  • • Conducting observation sessions during many astronomical events.
  • • Doing and managing projects, which have an application towards astronomy, astrophysics, space science.
  • • Organising talks, workshops, hand on sessions.
  • • Organising trips to Research facilities, labs and dark night sky areas.
  • • Technical projects like building our own telescope, regular or radio telescope, mini satellite, rocket and rover.
  • • To conduct outreach program at schools and colleges.

In our Institution there are students who are passionate towards astronomy, rocket science, space technology, unmanned rovers, radio telescopes and satellites. But due to lack of association and communication their knowledge & awareness in this field is hindered as a result the students lose interest. So, we the club people will try to connect these students with experts via our association through the activities as mentioned above.

Prof. Mahadeva Prasad P, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics has coordinated an One week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on ‘Recent Trends in Smart Materials and their Applications’ from 13th to 17th November 2018, in association with department of polymer science & tech., at SJCE, JSSSTU, Mysuru. Many participants from the same university and also from other Institutes and research centers had participated.

The program was inaugurated on 13th November 2018 at CMS Seminar Hall, SJCE, Mysuru. The main objective of the program is to enlighten and impart knowledge on advanced technology involved in the designing & fabrication of smart materials to the faculty members as well as research scholars of science, engineering & technology, so that they can extend their research activities to the next level of smart applications.

Dr. T. N. Nagabhushan, Principal, SJCE, presided over the inaugural function. Dr. Dada J Herle from Akzo Nobel India Limited, Bengaluru was the chief guest and Dr. M. J. Yanjarappa from Akzo Nobel India Limited, Bengaluru was the guest of honor.  The FDP program coordinators Dr. Siddaramaiah, Professor and Head, Dept. of Polymer Sci. & Tech., and Prof. Mahadeva Prasad P, Department of Physics SJCE, were present on this occasion. Master of ceremony was performed by Dr. Roopa S. The participants from various Institutes and SJCE were also present during the inaugural function.
